Retail sales for adult-use began in October 2020, establishing Maine as a significant player in the East Coast cannabis industry. The state is now actively exploring the establishment of cannabis consumption lounges, often referred to as "canna lounges" or "cannabis hospitality lounges." While initial legislative efforts to permit on-site consumption were modified, a new bill (HB 1365) has been introduced to allow municipalities to license these unique social spaces. This developing framework means that communities across Maine, including vibrant cities like Portland, Bangor, and South Portland, could soon host dedicated venues where adults aged 21 and over can legally consume cannabis products.
